Classes

Flotilla 02 of Division 05, First Northern District, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary provides classroom instruction to members of the (Boating) Public at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School. We routinely teach new boaters (as well as those with years of boating experience) the fundamentals of safe and responsible recreational boating.

Our instructors are (highly) experienced boaters in their own right, and most have been with the United States Coast Guard (Auxiliary) for many, many years.

We teach everything from "Boating Skills and Seamanship"—tailored to suit the needs of new boaters—to advanced topics suitable for those more experienced boaters whom wish to learn even more in a variety of subject areas.

As an adjunct to the "Boating Skills and Seamanship" course, we are now offering an additional series of classes aimed at aiding (would be) sailors; this course of instruction focuses on "learning the (proverbial) ropes" of small boat sailing. Entitled "Let's Go Sailing", this course is ideally suited to the novice sailor/boater or someone just interested in learning more about sailing.

One of the most popular, albeit labor-intensive classes we offer, is designed to help the cruising mariner wishing to become more proficient with his or her navigation skills; this class is appropriately titled "Weekend Navigator". This Course of Study typically spans 13 weeks, and provides the dedicated student with all the information (s)he will need to learn to be a competent (coastal) navigator. As most students do not plan to cross entire oceans, this course will provide them with all the fundamental skills required to safely navigate the coastline(s) of the United States, et cetera. We note here that Celestial Navigation is not included in the Weekend Navigator Curriculum however, as it is not generally considered a viable means of navigation in the confined waters of the coastal/littoral region, and is in any case, an entire subject unto itself.

We also offer instruction on the use of GPS and can provide some recommendations as to selection of GPS units. Individuals interested in learning more about GPS should consider taking the "GPS For Mariners" Course offered at various times throughout the year, both with our Flotilla (05-02) and with our fellow Auxiliarists in the Metro Boston area.

Please Note: Our Winter/Spring 2010 Instructional (Class) Schedule has yet to be fully compiled; we are therefore unable to list the dates and times of the Winter/Spring 2010 classes at this time. We apologize for any scheduling difficulties which this may cause....

However, please do check back soon, as we are constantly updating our instructional schedule with the relevant dates and times of each of the classes we will be offering—as soon as this information becomes available to us—and we will post it for your convenience.

The following classes will be offered by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary to the (Boating) Public at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School (C.C.H.S.) in Concord, MA at 7:30 in the evening, beginning on the dates indicated below. A (nominal) fee will be required to help cover the cost of the materials used in the classes.
